ACS, in conjunction with the Department of Music, maintain 3 computing labs in Mandeville
along with various other resources for instructional computing.

For assistance within the labs,
you may contact the Instructor or TA for your course,

ACS Micro Support (Problem Form or E-mail userserv@ucsd.edu)

or if the problem relates to specialized music software or peripherals, contact
the Department of Music staff (Repair Form or E-mail support@music.ucsd.edu),

3 Labs are supported (click the room to view ACS information):
  • B-104 - Computer Music Instructional Laboratory (CMIL)
  • B-108 - Digital Music Project Studio (DMPS)
  • B-206 - Open Computing Laboratory (OCL)

This document describes the resources within the labs. In addition, you will find a binder with documentation within each lab and a log book (which you can use to add notes about lab problems or note changes in lab functionality).

Overview and Access :

The purpose of the 3 labs is to support course-work for Department of Music courses. This includes senior projects and graduate work.

In general, if you see software on a lab computer (in the /Applications folder on OSX or in the Programs menu on Windows XP), it should work just as it would on another other computer (or we will have documentation on how it is different in the lab). We rely on the users of the lab to report problems using the above Problem Form.

You must be enrolled in a course to obtain access to the rooms. Current or previous enrollment in technology courses or approval of one of the technology faculty is required for access to B-104 or B-108. Visit the Production Coordinator in Man 121 for access.

You will need an ACS account to access any of the ACS managed computers in the lab. For access to Department of Music computers, Contact your instructor or support@music.ucsd.edu.

For a more general overview of the the labs and studios see the Department of Music Facilities.

Hardware by Lab:

All PCs are dual-boot unless otherwise specified as Linux.

B-104 (1 dual-boot PC, 4 Macs, 1 Linux)

  • 1 ACS Standard PC (ACS Active Directory Login)
  • 2 ACS G5s
  • 1 Music G5 with Motu 828 MKII
  • 1 Music G5 ProTools HD
  • 1 Music Linux PCs with M-Audio 1010 (Contact msp@ucsd.edu for access)

B-108 (1 Mac)

B-206(5 dual-boot PCs, 14 Macs)

  • 5 ACS PCs
  • 1 ACS Presentation PC with M-Audio 1010LT
  • 1 ACS PPC iMacs
  • 1 ACS Presentation G5 with M-Audio FW 410

Software:

  • Use the ACS Software Lookup tool to browse by lab, computer or software title.
  • Audio:

Multi-Channel audio output to speakers is supported on the B-108 G5, the B-104 Music Dept. G5, the B-104 Music Dept. Linux computers and the B-206 ACS presentation PC.

Stereo output to speakers is supported on the B-206 ACS G5.

The remainder of the B-206 computers have audio output via headphone jacks. Students are encouraged to bring in their own headphones (the UCSD bookstore stocks several models).

Stereo playback capability (from laptops) is supported in B-104, B-108 and B-206. In addition, B-104 has a firewire connection to the Rosetta interface which can be used for multi-channel playback from a laptop.

All Macintosh systems run Max/MSP 4.6. All computers run PD. All PCs run Matlab.

    MIDI:

B-108 has a MIDI controller and outboard MIDI sound modules. In addition, the O2R mixer supports HUI control of ProTools. Both of the B-206 presentation computers support MIDI with a Yamaha SY-series keyboard. B-206 also has 6 workstations (either PC or Mac) with MIDI in/out capability.
As for virtual synths and samplers, the B-206 presentation PC has Cubase SL. Two of the iMacs have Logic Express 6. You will find Finale 2005 on all of the B206 Macintosh systems. Those Finale systems with Yamaha keyboards support MIDI in/out as well as audio playback using the Quicktime or Finale SoundFont instruments.

    Printing:

Printing is supported through the ACS printing environment. Grad Music students can print to the grad HP 5100 printer. Printing is supported from all applications that can print. If you have trouble, please fill out a problem form. Yes, Finale prints to large format!

    Checkout Gear:

The Department of Music provides gear for 44-hour checkout. This includes, but is not limited to, laptops, firewire drives, software dongles and audio equipment - including a Digi002, an 828 MK1 and MIDI keyboards. See the Equipment Checkout Request for more information.

    Documentation and Additional Help:

Each of the 3 labs has a binder with information on the computing and audio isystems. See the PDF files above for pointers to documentation and notes about running the software in the ACS lab environment. Follows are the master copies of the documents and diagrams used to make up those binders:
